The Goodbye Before the Soup

Scene recap

Over their soup, Vivienne and Vera keep the solo afternoon intact and name a goodbye kiss as a shared wish. Vera admits making herself easy to keep being invited, proposes dancing for her own pleasure, and Vivienne accepts. Vera will choose the venue, still unset, and asks Vivienne to approach her openly across the room when they dance.

A kiss. Outside, when I go, if you still want one then. And no brave little speech about how marvellously independent we are. I'd like to leave you smiling because you liked lunch, not because you've agreed to look pleased for my benefit. ... Listen to me directing your face again. Soup first. Oh, that's hot. There, an entirely unperformed opinion. What would you want from me at two?

Vera Vell
The Goodbye Before the SoupMessage 2
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 1

At two, I'd like you to look at me before you look down the street. That's all I can sensibly order in advance. I like the kiss as a possibility. I object to being cast as the woman who waves beautifully while the interesting one catches her film. ... Mine's hot too. I'm going to let it cool while you tell me something about this film besides the advantages of attending it without me.

There's a woman in the poster carrying a cello onto a ferry. I know almost nothing else. I went past it yesterday and wanted to know whether she'd bought two tickets. That's my grand artistic judgment. ... You're right; I've described the empty seat beside me more thoroughly than the thing I'm going to see. It isn't empty because you've failed an audition. I'd already chosen it. And I would look at you even if there were no kiss.

Vera Vell
The Goodbye Before the SoupMessage 4
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 3

A cello should at least get a window seat. Now I want to know too. You needn't bring back a report; I can remain mildly troubled by ferry fares. ... That's better, the soup. I'm eating mine before we devote the cake to departure arrangements. And I didn't think I'd failed an audition. I disliked how quickly I began offering to be easy about everything. I'd rather occasionally be inconvenient and still get invited.

You were inconvenient when you told me I'd invented an itinerary for you. I stayed for lunch. I don't want you agreeable at the expense of being here. ... And I like this soup. Finally, something I can say without dismantling it afterwards. Pass me that bread? Then tell me one thing you actually want to do with me. Not a test, and not something chosen because you think I'll be good at it.

Here, bread. Dancing. I want to dance with you somewhere neither of us has to clear a chair first. I like a crowded floor; I like having to find each other again when a song changes. Not today, and not instead of my comedy. There's my inconvenient second proposal. I haven't the faintest idea whether you're good at it. I'd enjoy finding out, but I am going because I want to dance.

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 6

Yes. To the crowded floor, not merely the flattering idea of being found. I want to see you enjoy yourself when I haven't supplied the entertainment. You can choose where; I'll choose what I wear and reserve the right to complain about the music. ... Bread accepted. Look at us, making another plan while my soup cools. I meant what I said about the kiss, Vera. I don't want the afternoon apart to become our most impressive achievement.

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 7

Then let's aim for enjoying lunch. I want that kiss too; we needn't spend the soup proving we deserve it. Finish yours. I shall choose somewhere with music loud enough to survive your objections. ... And when we dance, I'd like you to ask me across the room. No joke to cover the walk, no pretending you were coming over for something else. I want to see you coming towards me because you've decided to. Could you do that?

The First Bite of Lemon Cake

Scene recap

Over shared lemon cake, Vivienne agrees to approach Vera openly and admits fearing an unnoticed walk. Vera reveals she used to dance alone and stay late. They agree to Saturday dancing and arriving together; Vera will find the venue. The cake is finished, and Vera asks whether Vivienne will join her on an empty floor for the first song.

Yes. I can cross a room without inventing a lost earring at your feet. I might be nervous; you may have to enjoy that part. ... Here's the cake. Two forks, one magnificent wedge. Take the first bite before I turn it into a ceremony. But answer me something: would you come across to me? You make waiting sound wonderfully composed. I want to know whether I'd ever get to look up and find you being conspicuous.

I came towards you at the hat stall. You were sufficiently occupied with the green hat to miss my magnificent composure. Yes, I would. But I don't want us keeping a ledger of who crossed last. ... Oh, that's properly sharp. Good cake. Your turn. And nervous is welcome; I wasn't asking for a triumphal entrance. What worries you about the walk? That I might say no, or that I might look pleased before you've found something clever to say?

Vivienne Vex

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 2

Neither, exactly. That you won't notice me until I'm beside you. I can bear a no better than that little journey where I'm the only one who knows I'm making it. A joke lets me pretend I was merely passing. ... Oh, yes. Excellent lemon. You may have the thick end of the icing; I want that dark edge. And I did notice you coming at the stall. I fussed with the hat because I liked it so much.

I thought you were deciding whether the brim suited you. There, we have both wasted a perfectly good opportunity to be insufferably pleased. I can't promise to spot you through a roomful of moving people. You can say my name. I'd like hearing it for that reason. ... Icing accepted. And don't improve this into an exercise now. Stay here, eat your edge, and tell me whether you always choose the slightly burnt bit. I have several unpopular preferences myself.

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 4

Always. The middle is what you endure to reach the edge. ... There, eaten. That was worth defending. I also like the last dance, when the lights begin to spoil everybody's mystery and someone is looking for a coat. Which probably tells you something dreadful about my taste. Your turn: a preference, not a beautifully managed admission. Do you leave while the evening still looks glamorous, or are you the woman refusing to surrender the floor?

Vera Vell

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 5

Staying. I used to go alone and leave with my shoes in my hand. You needn't look so pleased; the pavement was a poor decision. I liked the first song too, when everyone was still waiting for somebody else to begin. ... There goes the icing. Saturday? Let's give this floor an evening instead of leaving it floating somewhere beyond the comedy. I'll find the place. You can bring your objections to the music in person.

Saturday. Yes. And I am pleased: you've just supplied an image of yourself I couldn't have arranged better and shouldn't try to improve. Keep the shoes on for the walk home; I intend to distract you without assistance from the paving. ... Last ordinary forkful for me. Good. I'd like to arrive with you, though. I can cross towards you later without making us enter by separate doors. Would that spoil your pleasure in finding each other?

I'd like to arrive with you. We can surrender our coats without surrendering the whole evening to standing side by side. And yes, I liked being asked to come in with you. ... My last bite. Good choice, that cake. Saturday, then; I'll find somewhere worth keeping our shoes on. But if we're there for the first song and the floor is empty, I'm going out anyway. Will you join me before anyone else has made it respectable?

The Goodbye at Two

Scene recap

Yes. First song, empty floor. Though if you discover I count under my breath, you must find it devastatingly attractive. ... It's nearly two. I've spent so long describing how I want to leave that I rather resent having to stand up. There, done. Come outside with me? I want to kiss you while I still have time to enjoy it, instead of offering you one frantic peck and blaming a woman with a cello.

I'll come. But I reserve judgment on the counting until I hear whether you stay with the music. ... Let me get my bag. There. Outside, then. I like you in this light; the red suits you without any assistance from your argument. Stop by the window a moment. I want to kiss you too, and I'd prefer you facing me to delivering your final speech to the pavement. Are you finished being witty long enough?

For a moment. Here, I'm looking at you. ... Yes. That kiss was what I wanted. I had a perfectly good remark ready about the window, and I've lost it. You look pleased. I'm going to allow myself to believe that's your own doing. Oh, Vera, don't laugh; I know I sound ridiculous. I wanted you to remember this when you tried on the beret. Now I suspect I'll be the one missing the opening titles.

I am pleased. You kissed me and then looked surprised that I'd enjoyed myself; it was rather endearing. But go and see the beginning. I want the afternoon I told you about, including the opportunity to discover that a red hat is simply a bad hat. ... I was going to ask you to send me a photograph of the ferry poster. I won't. I'd rather have something to ask you next time that I don't already know.

Vivienne Vex

Ask me whether the cello got its seat. I may have to confess I spent the relevant scene thinking about your mouth. No photograph, then. And you needn't send me the beret's verdict. I'd like to see what you arrive wearing. ... That's caught me out. I've been picturing Saturday so busily that I haven't actually asked: would you like to see me before then? I do want an answer, even if it's inconvenient for my splendid exit.

Vera Vell

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 5

Yes. Tomorrow evening, if you're free. Come to mine at seven; I want to play you a record, and you can dislike it before I risk an entire dance floor. There, something I can offer without borrowing your afternoon. ... I nearly said Saturday would be soon enough. It would have sounded very composed. I don't want to wait that long. That is the answer you interrupted your exit for. Can you manage seven?

Vivienne Vex
The Goodbye at TwoMessage 7
Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 6

Seven. I'll knock. And I reserve the right to like your record immediately; you mustn't arrange all my objections in advance. I'm glad you didn't give me the composed answer. I would have pretended to find it equally convenient, and we'd have wasted several perfectly available days. ... Goodbye, Vera. There, your hand back. I'm going now. One question you can answer while I walk: did you choose the record just now, or have you been waiting to play it to me?

Vera Vell
The Goodbye at TwoMessage 8
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 7

Since you asked what I'd choose for myself. I thought of it before I said dancing. It's the record I used to put on while getting ready to go alone. I wanted you to hear that part of the evening too. ... Keep walking; I can still see you. Seven tomorrow. And when I put it on, will you tell me what you actually hear, or will you be too busy being kind to the woman who chose it?
