The Pepper Beside the Frying Pan

Scene recap

They agree on two omelettes and exchanged tastes. Vivienne cooks and plates hers with a browned edge and small tear. Vera tastes the crisp corner and starts her remaining pepper over lower heat. Tea is ready. Vera reveals she usually stops inventing tunes around company but continued with Vivienne. They agree to revisit the tune after Vivienne's song tomorrow; Vera now invites Vivienne to propose its fourth note.

A browned edge. There, scandal before tea. Soft in the middle is lovely, but I want the little crisp bit that argues with the fork. Could we make two? I'll cook mine, and you may watch me discover how much confidence I've borrowed from an empty pan. Give me the pepper first, though. I meant the offer to help. And point me at the knives; I refuse to open six drawers and pretend I was admiring the handles.

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 1

Top drawer, left of the sink. Here's the board. Strips, please; I like knowing the pepper survived. Two omelettes, then, but I want a piece of your crisp edge. You can have a piece of mine. That sounds considerably more interesting than defending separate plates. ... I'll switch the kettle on. And you cook first. I was about to claim the pan because it's mine, which is a poor culinary argument. Have you actually tossed an omelette, or merely threatened one?

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 2

Successfully? Once. I have folded the evidence on other occasions. I'll use a spatula; your ceiling needn't become acquainted with my ambition. ... There, strips. I'm putting half in the pan with the butter. You can crack the eggs while I keep these moving. I like this, you beside me doing something with your hands. Though you have gone very quiet. Are you listening to the kettle, or is that a tune? I can hear about three notes.

Vera Vell
The Pepper Beside the Frying PanMessage 4
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 3

A tune. Mine, unfortunately; there's nobody else to blame for the missing fourth note. I make them up when I'm cooking. Usually I've forgotten them by the washing-up. ... Eggs in the bowl, there. I'll beat them. Don't give that little phrase words yet. I can see the temptation arranging your face. I want to find out where it goes before you turn it into a woman regretting a hat. Would you hum it back? Just what you heard.

Vivienne Vex

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 4

The hat is devastated. All right. ... Mm, mm-mm. That last one was lower when you did it, wasn't it? Again. Mm, mm-mm. I'll keep that while you find the next bit. Here, half the eggs, please; the pepper's ready. ... There. I hadn't expected to be cooking to something nobody else knows. I like it. But don't let me tidy the tune for you merely because I can sing louder. Was that closer the second time?

Vera Vell
The Pepper Beside the Frying PanMessage 6
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 5

Exactly right the second time. Keep it there. ... Mm, mm-mm, mmm. No, that fourth one's dreadful. It sounds as though the kettle has been refused a loan. Speaking of which, it's boiled. I'll make the tea. You watch your edge. ... I like having you hear it before it's any good. Usually I stop humming when someone comes into the kitchen. Today I didn't notice I'd carried on. That's rather different from deciding to give a performance.

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 6

Then I shall resist applauding. Though the kettle's financial difficulties deserve a verse eventually. ... Look, brown underneath. Folding now. Ah. A small tear; nothing requiring a curtain. Plate, please? There. Your pan again. I'll cut you the crisp corner while you start yours. And I'd like to hear those three notes tomorrow, after my song. Not as an examination. I want to know whether I still remember them when there isn't a pepper helping me.

Vera Vell

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 7

Yes. After your song. If I've forgotten, you can start me off. ... Give me that corner. Oh, that's good. I'm still having mine soft; admiration hasn't overthrown breakfast principles. Butter, remaining pepper, and lower heat this time. There. Take your tea before it grows formidable. I want your fourth note now, Vivienne. You were careful not to change mine; I've noticed. But I'm asking you to add something. Hum those three again, then choose where you'd go. I'll tell you whether I want to follow.

The Note That Would Not Finish

Scene recap

They develop Vera's tune by testing Vivienne's repeated-note suggestion and saving her downward ending for a second pass. Vera reveals she cannot read music. They adopt provisional 'stay for a bit' words and trust both memories for tomorrow. Vivienne stays after supper and requests a kiss; Vera reciprocates, but no kiss occurs. Their joint singing starts at different pitches. Vera likes the combined sound and asks to repeat it intentionally; Vivienne has not answered.

All right. Your three first. ... Mm, mm-mm, mm. Down, there. I like that; it sounds finished without putting on a hat and leaving. Try it with me before you condemn it. And don't smile merely because I offered. I'd rather lose an argument about four notes than spend tomorrow humming something you privately despise. ... Tea first, though. I've managed to make a musical proposal with a dry mouth.

Vera Vell
The Note That Would Not FinishMessage 2
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 1

Mm, mm-mm, mm. ... It's perfectly sensible. That's my objection. Mine was about to go somewhere, and yours has found its coat. I don't despise it; I want it later. Here, eggs in. Now listen if I hold your last note a little higher. ... No, I've only made it anxious. You may laugh. I invited a singer into my kitchen and have immediately begun arguing with her about singing.

Vivienne Vex
The Note That Would Not FinishMessage 3
Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 2

You invited an opinionated woman; the singing is a subsidiary hazard. Yes, that was anxious. Try no new note at all. Your three, then the first one again, but longer. ... Like that. And then my little coat-fetcher can finish the second time round. I'm laughing because you look so affronted by a sound you made yourself. I find that face very hard to resist. Keep making it while I taste my supper.

Vera Vell

Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 3

Mm, mm-mm, mmm ... Yes. Again, and down. That's it. Your coat-fetcher has somewhere to come home from now. ... Folding. Plate beside yours, please. I ought to tell you I can't write this down. I don't read music. When I asked you to remember it tomorrow, I wasn't being charmingly elusive; you may actually be the better place to keep it. And yes, I heard the compliment. Come sit beside me and see what other regrettable expressions supper produces.

Vivienne Vex

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 4

Plate here. And me here. ... Give me the promised taste before I decide all your expressions are admirable. Oh, that's softer than mine. I like it, though I'm keeping my edge. We could give the tune words just for remembering, if you want. Nothing about hats. 'Pepper in the pan'—no, too many little soldiers marching. I can remember by ear, Vera, but I can't promise I'll wake up with every note behaving. Shall we risk both our memories?

Vera Vell
The Note That Would Not FinishMessage 6
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 5

Both memories, then. But try 'stay for a bit.' Stay, for-a, bit ... No, the last word needs holding. There. That's embarrassingly serviceable. I'm not asking you to sing instructions at yourself; you can leave when you want. I just like how it sounds. And I do want you to stay after we've eaten. I'd rather say that while there's still supper on the plates, before my clearing them starts an entirely unnecessary mystery.

Vivienne Vex

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 6

Stay, for-a, bit ... Oh, it does fit. That's infuriating. I had an excellent career planned for the hat. Yes, I'll stay after supper. And I want to kiss you when we aren't balancing plates, so don't get up the instant you're finished. ... There's my last forkful. You can have my empty plate in a moment. First, sing it with me once. I want to hear what happens when neither of us politely waits for the other to finish.

Vera Vell
The Note That Would Not FinishMessage 8
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 7

I want that kiss too. After this. ... Stay, for-a, bit ... Wait. I started lower than you. We weren't singing the same notes, but I liked those two sounds together. My accidental contribution to civilisation. Let me put my fork down. There. Don't correct it yet. Did you hear it happening, or did we both reach the end and discover we'd been in different places? I want to try it again, and this time I want to keep the difference.

The Space Between Two Notes

Scene recap

They find a quieter rough harmony after Vera admits stopping to enjoy Vivienne's voice. Both finish supper and set their plates down. Vivienne accepts Vera's invitation with a kiss and stays close; both say they liked it. Vivienne admits fear about singing her whole song to Vera but still intends to do it. Vera agrees to sing their phrase afterwards and asks whether Vivienne fears failing to get a laugh or being questioned about a particular line.

I heard you underneath me on 'bit', and nearly followed you down. Then I liked it too much to move. Let me put this plate on the table. There. Give me your first note alone, just once; I'll find mine against it. I want the difference too, Vera. But at present I couldn't swear which of us wandered where. We may have produced something magnificent by both being slightly wrong. I'd hate to correct only half the accident.

Vera Vell
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 2
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 1

Mm. That one. I'll hold it, but don't look so professionally encouraging; it makes me want to invent a cough. ... Mm. There, you come in. Oh, I've moved up to you. I meant to stay where I was. That's irritating. Try facing the window instead of me. I want to hear you without watching your mouth tell mine what to do. And don't become modest about knowing more than I do. I asked for company, not a tactful amateur.

Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 2

The window shall receive my finest expression. ... Stay, for-a, bit. There, I kept mine. Did you? I couldn't hear you at the end; I was much too loud. That wasn't encouragement, by the way. I was trying to work out whether you'd already decided my note was better. A rather vain worry, now I've said it. Start again, and I'll come in quietly. You needn't win a shouting match to keep something you made in your own kitchen.

Vera Vell
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 4
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 3

I stopped. You couldn't hear me because there was nothing to hear. I was listening to you finish, and then I forgot to be cross. Your note isn't better; I like your voice. There, a serious obstacle to my musical independence. ... Stay, for-a, bit. Come in now, quietly. Mm ... yes, that rubs a little, doesn't it? Keep yours there. I like this less tidy than the first accident. It sounds as though we're both still in the room.

Vivienne Vex
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 5
Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 4

Mm ... bit. There. I heard you all the way through that time. I like the little scrape before we finish. Don't smooth it out tomorrow on my account. ... I'm turning back now. You have made looking at a window extraordinarily difficult. I like your voice too, especially when you forget to arrange it. And I still want that kiss. Have you finished with your plate? I can move mine; I can't move yours by force of musical conviction.

Vera Vell
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 6
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 5

One bite. I refuse to abandon a perfectly good supper because you've become persuasive. ... Finished. Plate on the table, beside yours. And no, I won't polish the scrape away. I want to see if we can find it again. But I've had enough looking at the side of your face for tonight. Come here. Yes, now. I'm not going to give you another musical problem first, though your expression suggests you suspect I keep a list.

Vivienne Vex
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 7
Vivienne replies to Vera· Message 6

A short list, surely. ... There. Oh, I liked that kiss. I'm staying right here a moment, if your shoulder can tolerate mine. I nearly asked you to sing with me tomorrow before we'd even found those notes. Then I decided it would sound as though I were recruiting you to make my song less frightening. It is frightening, a little. The whole thing, with you listening. I still intend to sing it. Afterwards, will you do this little one with me?

Vera Vell
The Space Between Two NotesMessage 8
Vera replies to Vivienne· Message 7

Yes. Afterwards, both of us. Your shoulder may stay as well; mine has raised no objection. And I liked the kiss. ... Tomorrow I'll listen to the whole song. I won't promise not to laugh; you've advertised a comic one, and I expect you to deliver. But I hadn't realised you were frightened of singing it to me. Is it getting a laugh that worries you, or is there one line you're hoping I'll hear without asking you what it means?
